WCACBS President’s Message – April 2023

Welcome to boating season everyone!

As I sit here and write this message, I`m staring out at a beautiful, calm, but rapidly rising Skaha Lake. As well, there`s probably enough flotsam out there to build a complete Express Cruiser! Definitely wood (sp) not want to be out there right now in anything but a jet powered aluminum river boat.

Your Society executive group is please to announce that our name has finally completed the change from Okanagan Antique and Classic Boat Society (OACBS) to Western Canadian Antique and Classic Boat Society (WCACBS). This name more accurately describes the geographical area from which our members hale. Although outwardly, you`d think changing our name would be a simple process, in reality, it took over 2 years to complete. We had to approve the motion to do so with the members at a General Meeting, apply for the name with the BC Societies Registry and then also get it approved by the ACBS mothership at one of their Directors meeting. This last step was completed in March. The next step in the process is to change our logo, website, and other materials to the new name; which will also need to be approved by ACBS.

Again, this year we are invited to attend the Peachland World of Wheels event in, you guessed it, Peachland on Sunday May 21. This is not an event that you have to register for but simply show up if you can. It`s held in a nice protected moorage, the launch ramp is close, is always a lot of fun, and you have the added bonus of being able to see about 500 collectable cars of all vintages and preferences.

Our major event of the season is, as last year, being held the Father`s Day weekend, June 16-18, at the Penticton Yacht Club. We are looking forward to an even more successful show this year. As anybody who was there last year knows, the weekend is a blast. The Friday evening will be an opportunity for you to moor your boat in the yacht club within mere feet of the launch ramp, then meet up and renew acquaintances at Rusty`s Pub, the yacht club`s restaurant. According to the operations Manager there is a new executive chef on board this year and changes are coming to the restaurant. After the show on Saturday, we will be having a catered dinner on the historic SS Sicamous, the 228 ft long steam powered sternwheeler that plied Okanagan Lake from 1914 until 1937. This is always the highlight of the weekend. On Sunday, we plan to motor north up Okanagan lake to Summerland (30-40 minutes one way) for a no host brunch at Shaughnessy`s Cove restaurant. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for this day moreso than last year but we did have several intrepid and garbage bagged boaters make the trek last year; the option to drive is possible; but, frowned upon!

Jim Cooper, President

Its so nice to finally get an edition of the newsletter out!

Truth is, I just haven’t had that much boating news to write about. Life gets in in the way of our passions sometimes but our spirit is usually thinking of a boat ride. It’s going to be a good boating summer and I hope to see you at Peachland World Of Wheels or the Penticton Boat Show or any of the boating events that ALL the ACBS chapters offer.

Our chapter is so geographically challenged I understand that if you live far away from the Okanagan, it is difficult to attend. Please be aware that you are invited to any of the events offered by other ACBS chapters. Just go to the events page at ACBS.org

I think that if we can get new members in our club we will be able to have more regional events and get-together s. The key is getting more members! If you know someone then tell them about us!

I wish everyone a fun and safe season and please take some photos and tell us about your adventures!

Cheers, Steve Leslie

Each year Peachland hosts the World of Wheels car show on Beach ave. They feature over 500 cars, Pin up girls, food, and live music. The organizers also invite us to fill their docks with club boats.

This year’s show is on Sunday, May21st. Bring your boat! Its always a great time! Lots of stuff to see and do!

I will be leaving from Mission early Sunday and returning the same day. Makes for a long day but its totally worth it! Sundays have very little traffic on long weekends.

Here’s a few photos of last years show!

We had a great time with awesome weather! Hope you can make it!

Your club’s success relies on your participation!

Our chapter is low on numbers and even lower on participants!

If EACH member could sign up ONE friend we could double our size…and you would have someone to come to events with!

We would also like to welcome our newest chapter members, Dave Cook and Wade Turner!

Penticton Boat Show June 16-18, 2023

Last year we tried a new venue for our annual show. The Penticton Yacht club offered up some dock space and clubhouse/bar&grill. Things worked out great! Our show was small but in a way it gave us an opportunity to see how things would work.

The Penticton Yacht Club is awesome and the staff are really accommodating. There is lots of parking and room for the trailers. The launch is right next to the docks so there’s very little stress getting the boats in/out. The docks are accessed through a card lock system and they have on-site security at night.

The show started Friday night by getting boats in the water and enjoying the evening outside of the clubhouse.

Saturday morning and early afternoon saw lots of people on the docks admiring the boats. The afternoon was an opportunity for participants to go for boat rides and explore some of the beautiful Penticton waterfront. Saturday evening was a delicious catered dinner on board the SS Sicamouse with a full tour of this historic ship afterwards. It was a beautiful, warm evening.

The rain moved in Sunday morning and many of us thought about giving up and driving to Summerland for brunch. Luckily, Marty Brown talked us in to boat up. After all… that’s what we came for! The sky started to clear on our way up and just got better as the day went on. We had a wonderful meal at Shaughnessy’s Cove restaurant and a great ride back! The Manager of Shaughnessy’s Cove loved seeing all the boats at the dock and is really excited to have us back this year!

Again, the boat launch and trailer parking are located right at the club so packing up is really easy and we all helped each other. We really had a fun time and I would encourage you to come and enjoy the weekend this June 16th-18th!

Hope to see you there!
