OACBS President’s Message – June 2021

Welcome all to another edition of Drydock, the Newsletter of the Western Canadian Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society. You may notice that I referred to our chapter as the Western Canadian Chapter as opposed to Okanagan chapter. Your board of Directors has recommended changing the name of the chapter to recognize the more diverse geographical area of our club. As the name change must be approved by a vote by the members, in short order you will be receiving an email inviting you to attend a “Special General Meeting” of the Society. The sole purpose of the meeting will be to vote on a motion to change the name of the society; you will be able to ask questions and speak in favour or opposition to the motion. Please try to make room in your schedules to attend this important, and hopefully short meeting to have your voice.

We are looking forward to our activities gradually opening again as the summer progresses. Although we stand by our decision to not host a boat show again this year, we do look forward to our “Poker Run” coming up on July 24, and perhaps at that time we will get some news of the border re-opening so that some of our members may attend shows stateside, in particular, the International Show Sep 16-18 in Couer d`Alene, Idaho.

I hope everyone is able to put aside the projects for a short time to get their boats wet; but only on the outside!

Have a great summer,

Jim Cooper

Mission Statement: To Promote the Love and Enjoyment of Historical Antique and Classic Boating

Save this boat…

I have had an old wood row boat in storage for the past 10 years. Not sure of the age or make. It would be a super project for someone to restore. The boat is located in Magna Bay BC (on Shuswap Lake) It’s free for anyone who may be interested. I can arrange delivery (within reason)

Please feel free to call me at anytime.  Doug Morgan, Magna Bay BC

Last March Bruce Middleton called me to say that a film crew was interested in having Absolute Classics supply a boat for an Infinity (Nissan) QX SUV commercial. Since the commercial was going to be filmed in the lower mainland, Bruce asked if I would be interested in helping out. I didn’t hesitate! An opportunity to go boating in March!

This was my first experience dealing with the movie industry that is now so prevalent in BC. I can’t say enough about the professionalism of everybody we dealt with. As with any success, its all about the prep! Bruce invested a ton of time making sure that the producers were able to select the right boat for their needs. After many phone calls and emails they decided on a 23’ Kral Classic. This boat belongs to one of Bruce’s customers and was for sale. Absolute Classics had imported some of these a few years back from Europe. A fibreglass hull with mahogany decks. A very classy, European style boat!

After a service and a full going over by the crew at Absolute Classics the boat was shrink wrapped and delivered to my place in Mission by fellow OACBS member Jim Dickson. Jim had to go through a snowstorm on the connector to get here.

Joel Beckman is the film company’s representative and is who I mostly dealt with. Joel is known as a car wrangler or in this case a boat wrangler. Joel came to my house the next day to see the boat and take some photos. He also had a brand new Infinity Qx80 delivered here to make sure it would fit the boat and trailer. I was very impressed with Joel’s attention to detail. I spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning and detailing and familiarizing myself with the boat.

The pandemic had shut the filming industry down for a short period and introduced very strict protocols in order to open. This meant I had to get tested and report to the health and safety officer on set the day of shooting. Again, very professional.

As luck would have it the shoot was to be at Alouette Lake. One mountain away from my house. I set out to arrive there at 6:00am. A lot of dew and ice settled on the boat until the sun got on it so I spent a lot of my time wiping the boat down while waiting in the staging area. The boat was finally brought down to the ramp and hooked up to the QX80. The water was like glass and the fog lifted just in time for a beautiful day.

I would learn that the commercial was actually a short story and it included a busy professional woman launching, operating, and hauling her boat. This included her backing down the ramp, driving the boat, and hauling the boat out.

My job was to facilitate these scenes with what they needed, keep the boat looking good, and most importantly, keep the boat safe. It was pretty impressive watching how they achieved the shots they needed. They used a “Russian Arm” for filming the ramp scenes, a large, very fast, drone for the water shots, and a gimball mounted camera for the interior scenes.

This film crew is a well oiled machine who were under the guidance of a director that had the respect of his crew. He kept a fast pace and there was no mistake he was in charge. The crew would execute his requests without question in a timely manner. Again I was so very impressed with there professionalism. Everything went great and I learned a lot about the filming process. What a great experience!

I haven’t seen the commercial yet. When it come out I’ll send a link to it in our next newsletter. Overall, I put a lot more time into it than I thought but its all the before and after stuff that we don’t think of that take all the time. I know it was a lot of time for Bruce too. We both wanted this to work and for the film company to be happy so I think it was worth the extra effort.

Its Full Speed Ahead!

With the warm weather here and lots of vaccine bringing hope we are well on our way to go full throttle! Some things have changed and will never be the same but some things will and need to return. Its been a long year and half and we are so thankful to all of our front line workers that have gotten us though this.

Our Board of Directors hope we can start rebuilding our classic boat connections and friendships. Starting next month, July 22, we would like to invite you to our monthly ZOOM meetings. You will receive an invite via email a few days ahead. Meetings are very causal and last about an hour. All OACBS members are welcome!

Please take advantage of the events that our chapter and the ACBS are offering. The International show in September is not that far to travel and promises to be well attended at a beautiful venue. There are a number of us from the Okanagan chapter attending. Everyone is welcome!

If you’ve never attended Mahogany and Merlot in Chelan it should be on your list!

For those who want to stay in BC, The Shuswap, one day poker rally will be fun to attend!

We are trying to put a day of boating in the lower mainland together as well! Stay tuned…

No matter what though, get out there! Enjoy your boat and send photos for the Newsletter!
